“We believe in the vision of the Writing Bee - "to inspire students of all abilities." This is what we want for our students - to participate regardless of ability, for this is what writing offers, an opportunity to try!”
BoomWriter caught up with Australian English Teacher and Head of Middle School, Alex Wharton (you can follow him at @whartonag on Twitter) to share his excitement for the 2019 Writing Bee.
Why did your school sign up for The 2019 Writing Bee?
We believe in the vision of the Writing Bee - "to inspire students of all abilities." This is what we want for our students - to participate regardless of ability, for this is what writing offers, an opportunity to try!
What skills are you hoping your students to develop throughout the competition?
We're really excited for our students to develop their skills in critical and creative thinking. The way the Writing Bee is structured means that they are constantly being challenged to grow and develop their writing skills, which will in turn grow students who are thoughtful and using their increasing awareness of the power of words.
What type of promotional activity are you hoping to do within the school to get your students excited?
We're going to be doing some 'mini' Writing Bee activities in class time, we'll be using some time at assembly with our student leaders to get the student body excited, and doing some dramatic readings of the special guest authors involved in the 2019 Competition.
What excites you most about the competition?
This is a fantastic opportunity for students to step out of the traditional classroom activity and be inspired by something different! I love that this has an international focus, with five other continents participating and growing more and more.
Why should other teachers sign up?
Why would any teacher not want their students to be more engaged and deepen their experience of the writing process? The 2019 Writing Bee offers support to busy teachers and presents the most wonderful vision of inspiration, where every student, of every ability can participate and do their best. Let's do this!
